Detecting AI in illustrations and digital art

Artwork is harder to judge than photos: digital painting, 3D renders and AI art can share the same clean look. We combine detectors trained on both photos and art, and read the generation settings Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI and NovelAI save in PNG files — a common giveaway when “hand-drawn” art is posted straight from a generator.

Clues an artwork is AI

  • Details that don’t follow through: jewellery, straps, hair and fingers that merge or end abruptly.
  • Inconsistent style within one image — a perfect face on a muddy, unfinished background.
  • Signatures or text that are illegible scribbles.
  • No sketches, layers, process videos or older work from the artist.
If you are commissioning art, ask for a work-in-progress screenshot or the layered file. Human artists can usually provide one easily.

Frequently asked questions

Can it detect AI anime art?

Yes. Anime models (often Stable Diffusion based, or NovelAI) frequently leave their settings in the file, which we read. Otherwise the pixel detectors decide.

Could it flag my own digital art as AI?

Occasionally, especially very smooth or heavily rendered pieces. That is why we show confidence and reasons. Original files with layer or app metadata help.

Is IsItMadeByAI really free?
