Questions & answers
What is IsItMadeByAI?
A free tool that tells you whether an image, video or piece of text was made by AI. It reads the AI labels hidden in files and runs several open-source AI detectors, then explains the result in plain English.
Is IsItMadeByAI really free?
Yes. Every scan is free, there is no sign-up, no credit card and no watermark on your results. The site runs on open-source detection models, which is how we keep it free.
How accurate is it?
When a file still carries Content Credentials or other AI labels (common for ChatGPT, Gemini, Firefly and Stable Diffusion files) the answer is essentially certain. Otherwise we combine several open-source detectors; they are right most of the time on unedited AI images but can be fooled by screenshots, heavy compression, filters and brand-new generators. That is why every result shows a confidence level and the evidence behind it — treat it as strong evidence, not proof.
Do you keep my photos, videos or text?
No. Files are analyzed in memory and thrown away as soon as your result is ready. Videos never leave your device — your browser pulls out a few frames and only those are checked. Nothing is published unless you tap Share, and then only a small preview is saved.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes — it is built phone-first. Tap “Upload”, pick a photo or video from your gallery (or take one), and you get the answer on the same screen. You can also paste a screenshot, an image link, or a link to a post. Then share the result straight to WhatsApp, Messages, X, Facebook or anywhere else.
What files can I check?
Images: JPG, PNG, WebP (and iPhone HEIC photos, which your phone converts when you pick them), up to 15 MB. Videos: MP4, MOV and WebM up to 3 minutes. Text: 40 to 15,000 characters. You can also paste an image link or a link to a post.
What are Content Credentials (C2PA)?
An open standard for attaching a signed “nutrition label” to media saying how it was made. OpenAI, Google, Adobe, Microsoft, Meta, TikTok and camera makers use it. If a file still has its credentials, we can confirm its origin.
Can I check a screenshot or an image I found on social media?
Yes. Screenshots and re-saved social media images lose their file labels, so the result relies on the pixel detectors alone. Crop to just the picture you want to check (no app buttons or captions) for the best result.
Why did a real photo come back as AI (or the other way round)?
Heavy beauty filters, HDR or “AI enhance” modes on phones, upscalers and strong compression can all look synthetic to a detector. Very new or heavily edited AI images can slip through. Look at the confidence level and the “Why” list, and use the 👍 / 👎 buttons — your feedback helps us tune the detectors.
How do I share a result?
Tap Share under your result. On phones this opens your normal share sheet (WhatsApp, Messages, Instagram, X…). You can also copy the link. Shared links show the verdict and a small preview.
Can I use this to prove someone used AI?
A confirmed label is strong evidence. A detector score on its own is not proof — use it as a starting point and look for the original source, drafts or other context.
Is there a limit?
No daily limit. We only slow things down if someone sends a huge number of scans in a few minutes, to keep the site fast for everyone.
