What gets removed
| Metadata | What it can reveal |
|---|---|
| GPS location (EXIF) | Exactly where the photo was taken — often your home |
| Camera & phone model | Your device, lens and sometimes its serial number |
| Date & time | When the photo was taken or edited |
| Software & edit history (XMP) | Apps used and every editing step |
| Content Credentials (C2PA) | A signed record of how the image was made or edited, including AI tools |
| IPTC “digital source type” | Labels such as “made with AI” or “edited with AI” |
| AI prompts (PNG text) | The full prompt, seed and settings Stable Diffusion / ComfyUI saved in the file |
| Comments & other tags | Anything else apps have written into the file |
We keep only what’s needed to show the picture correctly: the colour profile and the rotation, so phone photos don’t turn sideways.
Why people clean their photos
- Privacy. Photos from phones usually contain your exact GPS location. Remove it before posting, selling items online or sending to strangers.
- Wrongly labelled real photos. A real photo that was retouched with an AI-assisted tool (like generative fill or AI denoise) can carry an “edited with AI” tag and get labelled on social media. Cleaning removes those tags.
- Don’t leak your prompts. Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI save your full prompt and settings inside every PNG. Strip them before sharing your work.
- Smaller files. Metadata can add tens of kilobytes to every photo.
What it does not do
- It doesn’t change the pixels. AI detectors that look at the image itself — including ours — still recognise AI-generated images.
- It doesn’t remove watermarks that are part of the picture: visible logos, or invisible pixel watermarks such as Google’s SynthID.
- It doesn’t make an AI image “real”. If an image is AI-generated, many platforms and laws (for example the EU AI Act) still require you to say so. Please don’t use this tool to pass off AI images as real photos.
How it works
- Pick one or more photos. They are opened inside your browser — nothing is sent to our server.
- We list everything found in the file, then copy the image data across without the metadata blocks. JPG, PNG and WebP are cleaned losslessly; formats like HEIC are converted to a high-quality JPG.
- Save the clean copy to your phone or computer. Your original stays untouched.
Frequently asked questions
Does this reduce image quality?
No. JPG, PNG and WebP files are cleaned without re-compressing — the picture data is copied byte-for-byte. Only HEIC and other formats are converted to a high-quality JPG.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. The photos never reach our server, so there is nothing for us to store or delete.
Will this remove the “AI info” label on Instagram or Facebook?
If a real photo was labelled only because an editing app wrote an AI tag into it, cleaning removes that tag. Platforms can still label posts using their own detection, and their rules require you to disclose realistic AI-generated content yourself.
Does it work on iPhone photos?
Yes. Pick photos from your library; iPhone usually hands the browser a JPG. If you get a HEIC file, it is converted to JPG automatically (on browsers that can open HEIC).
Can I clean videos?
Not yet — this tool handles photos. Video support may come later.
Is IsItMadeByAI really free?
Yes. Every scan is free, there is no sign-up, no credit card and no watermark on your results. The site runs on open-source detection models, which is how we keep it free.
